Open Pitch Night How to use

Version 1.1 Updated October 17, 2026 What's new

What it does

Made for our own card nights. Instead of a scrap of paper and arguments about who bid what, one phone on the table keeps score: two teams, the bids, the points, first to 21 (or whatever you play to).

Friends & family, from your phones

Start a table, send the family its 4-letter code or link, and everyone plays from their own phone, wherever they are. Pick your seats (partners sit across), fill any empty chair with a computer player, and the host taps Start. Our server deals, and each phone only ever gets its own cards, so nobody can peek. If someone's phone drops off, they rejoin right where they were, or the host can let a computer finish their hand.

Play the computer

No one around for a game? Pick Play the computer and sit down at a real card table: you and a computer partner against two computer players. Bid, pick up the widow, name trump, throw away and draw back up to six, and play every trick. Your partner's cards stay face down just like at a real table, and the computer players don't peek either. Stuck? Tap Hint. Every hand goes on the scoreboard, stamps and bragging rights included, and if you close the page mid-hand it picks up right where you left off.

Your kind of Pitch

Pick 8-point Widow Pitch (the default), 10-point, 5-point or classic 4-point Pitch, or set up your own: points a hand, the lowest bid, and what a poked dealer gets stuck with. The bid buttons, the points, the Play-to score and even the Rules page change to match.

Let the cards do the math

Open the hand tracker, pick trump, and tap each card into the team that took it as the tricks come in. It works out High, Low, Jack, Off-jack, both jokers, Ten, Three and Game by itself, with a running total for each team, then fills the hand in for you with one tap. Just want to settle Game? The quick Game counter adds up tens, aces, kings, queens and jacks and says who gets the point.

Score a hand in four taps

Or skip the tracker: pick who won the bid, what they bid, and how many points they took. The other team's points fill in for you, and before you add the hand it shows exactly what will happen. Made the bid? You score every point you took. Missed it? The bid comes off your score, and yes, you can go below zero.

Whose deal is it?

Put in all four players and the app keeps track of the deal: who's dealing, who bids first, and it passes left after every hand. Can't agree who deals first? Tap Draw for it and everyone gets a card: high card deals, and ties draw again. When someone gets poked, it already knows which team is stuck.

Shoot the moon

If your table plays it, turn it on under House rules: bid every point, and either win the game on the spot (miss it and lose), or score double.

Bragging rights

The Games page keeps awards across every game you've played: Most wins, Hot streak, Best bidder, Biggest hand, Moonwalkers, Most poked and more, plus a leaderboard. Mark a hand Poked (everyone passed and the dealer got stuck), Self-poked (they bid when they really shouldn't have) or Rotten widow (they counted on the widow and it let them down). A rubber stamp slams onto that team's card, each team's total is counted all game, and the hand list keeps track of bids made and sets.

How to play, in plain English

New to the game, or teaching the grandkids? The Rules page walks through the deal, bidding, trump, the points and scoring for whichever kind of Pitch you pick. Pitch has more house rules than almost any card game, so the score keeper doesn't argue: if your table counts things differently, just enter the points each team took.

Your phone, your scores

Everything is saved right on your phone, games and all (even a hand you're halfway through tapping in), with nothing sent anywhere and no account. Install it and it opens like an app with its own icon, even with no signal at the lake.

How to use

  1. Open Pitch Score Keeper, type the two team names (and all four players, if you want the deal tracked), pick your Game type and tap Deal 'em. Not sure who deals first? Tap Draw for it.
  2. Playing with family? Pick Friends & family, type your name and tap Start a table, then Share the link. Everyone else opens the link (or taps Friends & family and types the code) and picks a seat.
  3. Want to practice? Pick Play the computer instead, type your name and tap Deal 'em. Tap a card to play it; Hint suggests a move.
  4. During a hand (optional): tap Track the hand card by card, pick trump, and tap each card to the team that took it. Tap Use these points when the hand's done.
  5. Score the hand: tap who won the bid, the bid, and the points they took (already filled in if you tracked it), then Add hand.
  6. Tap Rules at the top any time for how to play.
  7. On Android: tap Install at the top (or ⋮ then Install app). On iPhone: Share, then Add to Home Screen.

Questions

How do we play together from different phones?

One person picks Friends & family and taps Start a table. They get a 4-letter code and a link to send. Everyone else opens the link (or picks Friends & family and types the code), types their name and picks a seat. Empty seats can be computer players. When the table's full, the host taps Start.

Can someone peek at my cards or crash our table?

No. The server deals and only sends each phone its own hand; the others' cards never reach your phone. Each seat has its own secret key saved on that phone, a full table can't be joined, and anyone guessing codes gets locked out and then blocked.

Can I play against the computer?

Yes. Start a New game, pick Play the computer, and you and a computer partner play two computer players, following the house rules you pick (game type, cards in the widow, shoot the moon and so on). Everyone else's cards stay face down, your partner's too, and the computer players only know what you'd know at a real table.

What are the points?

It depends on the kind of Pitch. 8-point Widow counts High, Low, Jack, Off-jack, Big joker, Little joker, Ten and Game; 4-point counts just High, Low, Jack and Game. Pick your game type and the Rules page lists them. If your table counts different cards, choose Custom or just enter the points each team took.

How does the hand tracker know who gets each point?

Pick trump, then tap each trump card (and any tens or face cards from other suits) to the team that took it. It finds the highest and lowest trump, who has the jacks and jokers, and adds up Game: tens 10, aces 4, kings 3, queens 2, jacks 1. If your table gives Low to whoever played it, tap the low card to that team.

How do you decide who deals first?

Most tables pick at random: everyone draws a card from the shuffled deck, high card deals (aces high), and a tie for high draws again. Put in all four players when you start a game and tap Draw for it; after that the deal passes to the left every hand, and the app shows who's dealing and who bids first.

What happens if both teams pass 21 on the same hand?

The bidders win if they made their bid. If they went set, the other team wins.

Does the other team score when the bidders go set?

By default, yes: they score whatever points they took. Some tables say they get nothing that hand; pick The other team scores nothing when you start a game (or later under Game settings).

Do Poked, Self-poked and Rotten widow change the score?

Only Poked, and only because the dealer's bid is stuck at 4. The others are just for bragging rights: they're stamped on the team's card and counted all game.

Where are my scores kept?

Score-keeping and games against the computer are saved only on your phone, in the browser; nothing is sent to us and there's no account. Friends & family tables live on our server while you play (just the names you type and the game), and are deleted after a few quiet hours. Each phone also keeps its own copy of the scores for bragging rights.
