Open Spades Night How to use

Version 1.0.2 Updated October 24, 2026 What's new

What it does

Spades Night is Spades for the whole family. Play together from your own phones with a 4-letter table code, or sit down with a computer partner against two computer players that think ahead. It's the same table and the same card server as Pitch Night, so if your family already plays Pitch, it works just the way you're used to. Pick a game any time at cards.thelabs.fyi.

Every popular kind of Spades

Pick a version when you start a game:

  • Classic: partners, standard deck. The way most people play.
  • Jokers & Deuces: the big joker, the little joker, the 2♦ and the 2♠ are the top four spades (the 2♣ and 2♥ come out).
  • Cutthroat: no partners, every player for themselves.
  • Suicide: one partner on each team has to bid Nil; the other bids 4 or more.
  • Mirror: everyone bids exactly the number of spades they hold.
  • Whiz: bid your spades, or go Nil. Nothing else.

Then set your house rules: Nil worth 100 or 50 (or not played), Blind Nil when you're 100 behind (or any time, or never), bags (every 10 costs 100, every 5 costs 50, or no penalty), whether spades have to be broken before they're led, whether the lowest club leads the first trick, a team minimum bid ("board"), bids of 10 or more count double, and the mercy rule at −200. Play to anywhere from 100 to 1,000.

Friends & family, from your phones

One person starts a table, picks the rules and sends everyone the link or the 4-letter code. Each person opens it on their own phone, types their name and picks a seat (partners sit across). Fill any empty chair with a computer player, and the host taps Start.

Our server deals and runs the game, and each phone only ever gets its own cards, so nobody can peek. Going Blind Nil? Your own cards stay face down until you decide. If someone's phone goes to sleep it picks right back up, and if someone has to leave, the host can let a computer play their seat. After each hand, the next one waits until everyone's ready.

Play the computer

No one around? You and a computer partner take on two computer players. Smart computer players imagine where the cards they can't see might be and play out the hand many ways before they choose (they never peek); in our testing they beat the Easy ones three games out of four. Easy ones are gentler for learning. Tap Hint on a bid and it tells you why ("in 9 of 10 imagined deals you took no tricks at all"). Turn on Auto-play for one hand or every hand.

The table

Your 13 cards fan out with the number and suit in the corner, spades on the left. Bubbles show what everyone bid and how many tricks they have so far ("2 of 3", "Nil so far", "Nil broken"), a ring shows who has the trick caught, and a badge says whether spades are broken. The scoreboard shows each side's score, its bags toward the next penalty, and this hand's bid against tricks taken. A card order button shows the spades from highest to lowest, handy with jokers and deuces. Real card and chip sounds (tap the speaker to mute).

At the end of each hand you see what every side bid, took and scored, with Nils, bags and penalties spelled out, and the score sheet keeps every hand.

No ads, no account. Games against the computer happen right on your phone, with nothing sent anywhere. Friends & family tables live on our server while you play (just the names you type and the game) and are deleted after a few quiet hours. Install it and it opens like an app with its own icon; playing the computer even works with no signal.

Questions

How do we play together from different phones?

One person picks Friends & family and taps Start a table. They get a 4-letter code and a link to send. Everyone else opens the link (or picks Friends & family and types the code), types their name and picks a seat. Empty seats can be computer players. When the table's full, the host taps Start. Got a code and not sure which game it's for? Type it in at cards.thelabs.fyi and it takes you to the right one.

How is Spades scored?

Partners add their bids together. Make it and you score 10 a trick bid, plus 1 for each extra trick (a bag). Miss it and you lose 10 a trick bid. Every 10 bags costs 100 points. Nil is worth 100 if you take no tricks and minus 100 if you take any; Blind Nil is double. First to 500 wins, and a side at −200 loses. All of it can be changed under House rules.

What happens to the tricks a Nil player takes?

They don't count toward the partner's bid; they count as bags (that's how most tables and apps play it). The Nil still loses its 100.

How does Blind Nil work here?

When your side is 100 or more behind (or any time, if you pick that house rule), your cards are dealt face down. You can bid Blind Nil before you look, worth 200, or tap Look at my cards and bid normally. At a family table the server doesn't even send your cards to your phone until you've chosen.

Which spades are highest with jokers?

In Jokers & Deuces, the big joker, then the little joker, then the 2♦ (it counts as a spade), then the 2♠, then the ace of spades down to the 3. The 2♣ and 2♥ come out of the deck. Other joker decks are under House rules. Tap the cards button on the table to see the order any time.

Can someone peek at my cards?

No. The server deals and only sends each phone its own hand; the others' cards never reach your phone, and the computer players only know what you'd know at a real table.

Is this the same as Pitch Night?

Same family: the same look, the same kind of table and the same card server, so family tables, computer players and Auto-play work the same way. Pitch Night plays Pitch; Spades Night plays Spades.

Where are my games kept?

Games against the computer are saved only on your phone, in the browser. Friends & family tables live on our server while you play (just the names you type and the game) and are deleted after a few quiet hours; each phone keeps its own copy of the scores.
